CAH

Using a bracelet

There are many types of bracelet's that a child with CAH can wear.

However, it's important for a bracelet to have the following:

Not only note the fact that the child has Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, but also to note that the child has "Adrenal Insufficiency." This is mainly because Medics sometimes are not educated about Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia due to it being a rare genetic condition. However, they ARE familiar with the term "Adrenal Insufficiency" So having this information can help emergency services to deal appropriately in a time of crisis.

It is vital that medics have this information if your not present and a bracelet with those terms on it and perhaps a phone number with a 24 hour helpline are a must with CAH children. Often the official Medic Alert bracelet's are the best type to aqcuire because they carry a reference number for the adult/child and also as above they have a 24 hour help line number where emergency services can ring for details if they should need to. Please consider therefore getting the right type of bracelet for your child as it may not always be the case that you are with them or are able to relay important information to emergency services. This information can be a life saver for your child.

See below:

Have a child wear a bracelet as opposed to a necklet or anklet. This is because one of the first places emergency services look for such is at the wrist. Also one has to consider that on small children, necklaces are not appropriate due to being a choking hazard. Anklet's are more likely to get caught up in things during play. A child will soon become accustomed to a bracelet when it has been worn for a few days and will have less tendency to play with it once the novelty wears off.

The example of a Medic Alert on this page may be different from other official Medic Alert bracelet's worn internationally, but they are all similar and all internationally reconized if one is travelling abroad with the child. So please consider this when purchasing. Most jeweller's can alter chain bracelet's but the velcro one displayed on this page was made by myself with double hand stitching and has lasted almost 12 months without any wear and tear. It is also a little more easy to remove if necessary. You may like to consider a chain one for a small baby though as they can become very adept at undoing velcro and don't understand the need to keep the bracelet on as we the parent's do.
