Why would YOU need food supplements? Well, let’s face it, in today’s busy world you don’t always have the time to eat a balanced meal but you know that nutrition is a very important part of our everyday lives. Food supplements can be a handy way to ensure that you get the nutrition you need while still maintaining your “on-the-go” lifestyle. As a consumer you have many choices nowadays not only in what nutrients you get but also how you get them.

Gone are the days of food supplements being only useful for grandma’s calcium pills and grandpa’s cod liver oil. Nowadays there is a veritable cornucopia of different food supplements that can be used to provide all sorts of nutrients that, for some reason or another, many people are just not getting enough of in their regular day-to-day diet. Food supplements can be used to add a little extra “oomph” to any person’s individual nutritional needs, to provide for a temporary shortcoming in a person’s diet (for example, when camping in the wilderness or visiting a foreign country where an individual’s daily diet will be unknown), or to provide an every day supplement to those who may not be getting the nutrition they need otherwise.

One of the newer types of food supplement available on the market is the so-called “smart drink”. These beverages have been on the market for about the past 15 years and have been marketed in many forms. These drinks provide many different kinds of food supplements including nutritional items such as gingko, Echinacea, ginseng, Taurine, mugwort, and many others. Most of these nutrients are available in nature, but are commonly available in concentrated form in food supplement beverages. Many of these are marketed as food supplements for many different reasons. Some are used for their energy generating qualities (such a Taurine and ginseng), while others are deemed useful for their effects on concentration (gingko, for example) or anti-oxidant qualities (such as beta carotene).
