If you are like many other people you may be wondering what steps you can take to make sure you maintain good heart health throughout your lifetime. There are many things you can do including not smoking, reducing your daily intake of fatty cholesterol ridden food items, and perhaps most importantly, EXERCISING. Yes, exercising is one of the best things you can do for yourself to maintain and ensure excellent heart health over the course of your life.

You are never too young (or too old) to get started in improving your heart health. If you have any concerns due to your age or pre-existing health conditions (heart health or otherwise), it is always a good idea to consult your doctor first before starting any serious exercise regimen to improve heart health.

You don’t need to get a membership at an expensive health club to begin the type of cardio-vascular exercises that are crucial to maintaining your heart health. There are many exercises out there that you can begin doing right now in the comfort of your own home that are perfect for establishing great heart health and for maintaining a healthy heart throughout your entire lifetime. The goal of cardio-vascular exercise is to get your heart rate up and to increase the flow of oxygen throughout the system. Some examples of great cardio vascular exercise to improve heart health are running, fast walking, bike riding, swimming, and rowing. In addition to getting your heart rate up it is also important for you to sustain that higher rate for a period of time. This means you will want to work yourself up to longer and longer periods of sustained, increased heart rate over time. For example, if you decide to give running a try, you will want to start with a short distance to begin with, perhaps one mile or so at most to begin with. As your heart health improves and you begin to become accustomed to getting your heart rate up, you will want to make the distance traveled, and in turn the length of time at a sustained and increased heart rate, longer each time you run.
