The hardy perennial herb known as leopard lily can be ingested, under certain circumstances, but is typically used for medicinal purposes. As one of the herbal medicines most used throughout Chinese history, leopard lily is still used today as a curative for many common ailments. Leopard lily has a wide range of homeopathic uses, generally targeting the lungs and liver. As a result of its properties, this herb is also effective in the fight against bacterial, fungal and viral entities and is often used in the reduction of fevers and inflammation. The root of the herb is used as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, expectorant and purgative, among a number of other treatment regimens, but should not be used by pregnant women. The herb is also effective in the treatment of acute throat disorders, such as laryngitis and tonsillitis. Its medicinal history reflects the herb’s use as a curative for mumps, as well. There are, unfortunately, not as many uses for this herb as with other varieties of the herb family. Some medical conditions – such as rice paddy dermatitis, for instance – certainly find relief from leopard lily, but are specific to a particular geographical location. In the case of rice paddy dermatitis, the herb has a wonderful effect on the skin condition that’s caused by working in the rice fields. In other environments, however, this would not apply, which may explain the extensive use of the herb throughout Chinese history, as opposed to various other parts of the world. Ingestion of Leopard Lily If your intention is to include the herb in your garden for aesthetic purposes or as a homeopathic agent to fight certain illnesses, then leopard lily can join the ranks of the other members of the herb family to find uses in your home.
