Family functional residential therapy treatment, also known as Functional Family Therapy, is based on predetermined sets of specific and defined goals as set by the therapeutic professionals. These goals are proactive and positive and of a prevention and intervention nature, made to assist young people and their families with their overall mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well being.

With an emphasis on preventing recidivism and delinquency, Family Functional Residential Therapy Treatment uses a model that is a composite of clinical therapy, empirically supported (scientifically tested) principles, and thorough clinical experience.

According to NYSOMH (the New York State Office of Mental Health), this model functions on three levels, using a multi-phasic map: phase one involves engagement and motivation; phase two involves behavioral change; and phase three involves generalizations which are specifically customized (or personalized) to meet the specific needs and goals of each family.

While general emphasis on delinquency prevention and rehabilitation is placed in all phases, equally important is the emphasis on the importance of the perspectives of all concerned in the Family Functional Residential Therapy Treatment process: youth, family, and cultural perspectives sit at the center of every session, in order to come to relative and relevant outcomes set by the goals of the therapist and the family.
