Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese style of treatment about 2500 years old. This method of treatment is especially effective for undefined pains and constant pains. This type of agonizing pain is difficult to treat and even analgesics do not reduce the pain.

We have a visual of Acupuncture as a treatment where the patient is lying on the bed with lots of needles and is in great pain. On the contrary, the procedure helps a person to get rid of all sorts of pain. The acupuncture needles are two to three inches long when an acupuncturist inserts them you feel a small pinch. You may feel slight numbness or a tingling sensation or heaviness or you may sleep during the treatments as some patients do.

Acupuncture is suitable for persons with constant pain or sportsmen with lingering pain due to sports injuries or overstressed muscles etc. some people do not like to take pain medications, acupuncture is one of the alternative treatments available to them. The treatment takes about twenty minutes; it can be more or less depending upon the patient’s condition.

Other pain medications cause irritability; sleepiness or confusion while Acupuncture relaxes you and will not introduce any chemical in the body. In Arthritis specially the medicines are relatively toxic and can harm the kidney, stomach and liver, here too acupuncture is a good alternative. As it is a versatile treatment it can be used with biofeedback, psychotherapy etc. It is best to use it as a complimentary treatment for maximum benefit.

These days traditional acupuncture involves inserting stainless steel needles at the various acupuncture points. There are 2000 acupuncture points in our body. Some practitioner’s insert the needle at the very site of disease while others select the points based on the individual symptoms.

Acupuncture poses some risks too if it is not performed by an experienced practitioner. These risks are pneumothorax, hemetoma or bleeding, or unsterilized needles can cause Hepatitis B.

Acupuncture uses an energy-based approach instead of a disease-based approach.
