Creating Aromatherapy Blends

CREATING YOUR OWN BLENDS

First decide what you want from your new blend. Are you looking for a personal signature fragrance? Or are you looking for a therapeutic result? Perhaps you want to break a habit. Or establish a new one, using aromatherapy as a trigger to help you succeed. Whatever you decide, do your research.

Get a list of 5 to 10 essential oils that have the properties you want for your new blend. You may want a blend that reflects several scent types or just a predominant overall category. Do you want a floral scent, a citrus scent, or an earthy scent? This is the time to establish your scent parameters. Next, decide which 3 or 4 essential oils from the research phase you'll use. If you find that they are of a predominant 'type', such as conifers or flowers, you might try to modify those scents with a 'neutral' essential oil.

Have a clear intention when creating your special blend which leads to success and is lots of fun. One example is the following blend:

Use ROSEWOOD (Aniba roseodora) or LAVENDER (L.angustifolia). If developing a blend that indicates VETIVER or ANGELICA, strong root oils, or YLANG YLANG or JASMINE which are intoxicating florals, usually 'lighten' them with LAVENDER, ROSEWOOD, or ORANGE (Citrus sinensis).

CREATING SPIRTIUAL BLENDS

The purpose of a spiritual blend is to enhance your experience of connection to the Divine. Throughout the history of many religious traditions, the use of scent plays a part in lifting up the human soul to unite it with Spirit. Incense is a visual & aromatic reminder that prayers can be lifted toward heaven by the fragrant smoke. Resins have long been popular materials to burn for religious purposes.

Chief among them are Frankincense and Myrrh. Fragrant woods such as Fir and Juniper are also popular. So are Sandalwood, Cedar, and White Sage. Flowers are traditionally used in tropical areas for religious purposes. Making your own personal blend that can be used as an anointing oil can be an uplifting experience. Start with a selection of essential oils that to you represent Love, Openness, Gratitude & other spiritual emotions.

Hold each bottle of essential oil at the level of your heart. Close your eyes and inhale deeply. Observe what comes up for you in the context of the aroma, your emotions, and your spiritual awareness. Do this until you have chosen a few oils that resonate with you on a deep level. Now try blending 1 drop of each essential oil in an amber bottle. Keep things simple and only use 3-5 oils.

Go through the exercise again, holding this new bottle at heart level and inhale. You may choose to add more drops of one or two oils. When your experience with your blend is positive, add approximately 100 drops of jojoba or another oil of your choice to this combination. This is your personal spiritual blend.
